This conference, entitled Bring It Home: Building Communities on a Rock Foundation, provided an opportunity to highlight the unique character of Community Economic Development (CED) initiatives in Atlantic Canada while engaging in nationwide learning.
CED is an approach that recognizes that economic, environmental and social challenges are interdependent, complex and ever changing. To be effective, solutions must be rooted in local knowledge and led by local community members. CED promotes holistic approaches, addressing individual, community and regional levels, recognizing that these levels are interconnected.
This year over 500 participants, including CED practitioners, civil society representatives, civil servants and academics, were in attendance. There were over 40 learning and information sharing sessions on the program, as well as exciting site visits and networking opportunities.
All plenary sessions and keynote addresses had simultaneous translation into French and English, as well as numerous workshops in each time slot. Additional workshops were offered in both official languages.
There were nine streams of workshop topics within the conference:
- Aboriginal CED
- Building Bridges
- Francophone CED
- Policy
- Research
- Technology CED
- Women and CED
- Youth and CED
- General
Also included were two Cracker Barrel Sessions, which grouped five sessions into one room. In this enlivened format, participants rotated through presentations every half-hour.
The 2007 National Conference on CED and the Social Economy was organized in partnership with CCEDNet and Futures in Newfoundland and Labrador's Youth (FINALY!).
