The Provincial Youth Council - Call for Nominations

FINALY!'s Board of Directors, the Provincial Youth Council (PYC) has a vacancy in the Western Region of the province. 

The successful nominee must be a current member of FINALY! and able to commit to approximately 5-6 hours per month for meetings, conference calls, etc.

We can offer you a chance to make a real difference in the lives of young people in Newfoundland & Labrador, opportunities to travel within the province for meetings, opportunities for training in leadership skills and so much more! It's also a fantastic addition to your resume. So, how would you describe yourself?

Are you a dynamic and energetic youth between the ages of 15-35? Are you enthusiastic about the youth in this province and their potential for a successful future right here at home? Does this sound like you? Tell us in 500 words or less why you or someone you know should be considered for this volunteer position!

Meet the PYC

Brittany Tibbo

Brittany, 19, is in her second year at Memorial University studying Behavioral Neuroscience and Business. She is actively involved in university life, volunteering and participating in various leadership programs such as Orientation and LEAP!. As well as being a member of the Province’s Youth Advisory Committee Brittany has been heavily involved in municipal youth councils; co-founding the Holyrood Youth Council in 2005 and representing Newfoundland and Labrador Youth at the 2008 National Rural Matters Conference. As a previous Eastern Representative for the Provincial Youth Council Brittany is excited to once again represent the youth of our wonderful province and is looking forward to the upcoming year.

Kayla Carroll

Kayla, the reigning Miss Teen Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador, is in her first year at Memorial University. She is originally from St.Lunaire-Griquet on the Northern Peninsula but moved to St.Johns this past August to pursue a degree in Business. Growing up in rural Newfoundland, Kayla has always challenged herself to become involved in her school and community. Sitting on practically every committee she could, Kayla served two terms as student council president, as well as other various school committees such as the newspaper, school council, yearbook, guidance advisory committee, and as a tutor for younger students. Kayla first became involved with FINALY! in 2008 when she got elected to the PYC as a Western Representative. She is passionate about youth involvement and is excited for the coming year.  

Greg Knott

Greg Knott, originally from Norris Point, is a former journalist now working in community development and the not-for-profit field in St. John's. He was elected to the Provincial Youth Council at the 2009 FINALY annual general meeting. A passionate Newfoundlander, Greg has always been an advocate for youth issues. In 2007 he was appointed by the provincial government to the Newfoundland and Labrador Youth Advisory Committee. Greg holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and History, as well as a journalism diploma from the College of the North Atlantic. Greg has been a volunteer with the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada and participated in the Raising the Roof campaign, a national initiativee to reduce homelessness across the country. His passions also include rural development, literacy, and the environment. In 2009 he led a successful grass roots campaign, Save Gros Morne National Park, to pressure the provincial government to scrap a proposal to construct a large scale power corridor through the park. An avid, and self-confessed VERY amateur photographer, Greg spends a lot of time slogging around the streets of St. John's looking for a great shot, and when he has the opportunity, he can be found traipsing around the rest of the province. On the greatest of occasions he travels to his hometown located in the amazing Gros Morne National Park. Greg also enjoys, hiking, golfing badly, napping, reading, using scissors and glue, camping, dandelions, peanut butter, peanut butter cups, trivia, watching movies, playing with his stray cat Oscar, and relaxing and doing nothing with friends and family. He is excited for the future of the province and the opportunity to be part of the leadership team with FINALY!.

 

Brady Huxter

Brady is a grade 10 student at Indian River High School in Springdale. Brady has been actively involved in many sports programs and has represented the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador at the national Table Tennis Championships in Quebec. In addition, Brady is an accomplished swimmer who holds a provincial record in the summer program for butterfly. Brady has recently gained an interest in community development and is currently enrolled in the encounters with canada program and the duke of edinburgh awards program. Brady is very interested in developing his leadership skills and sees FINALY! as the ideal organization to gain valuable experience. Brady is also a budding entrepreneur where he films and produces wedding videos for couples who get married at Riverwood Inn. Brady is a proud Newfoundland and Labradorian and looks forward to having a say in the development of the province!

Jeremy Hodder


Jeremy was born in Brampton,ON, moved to Newfoundland & Labrador to go to school when he turned four. He is an honour graduate from Riverwood Academy in Gander Bay and was valedictorian of his class with various academic achievements. In his spare time, Jeremy like to play guitar - right now he's learning how to play the piano and sing. He is also very active in sports and art. His favourite quote is" Be the change you want to see in the world" - Mahatma Gandhi. He loves socializing, meeting new people and visiting new places.

 

Mary Alliston Butt

Mary Alliston recently moved to Morrisville in 2008 from Carbonear, and is currently completing grade 11 at Bay D’espoir Academy. In school she is a member of two choirs, drama, Tutoring for Tuition, recycling program, and is fighting for a girl’s basketball team. She’s a dedicated volunteer and loves to help out others in anyway she can. A program that she is very passionate about is volunteering at the Burry Heights Summer Camp, and has been attending there for eight years. Mary Alliston enjoys all outdoor activities, dancing, singing, playing piano, and travelling. She loves our province, and is determined to help out our youth. With this determination and dedication she was elected in October 2009 in Port Blandford at the AGM to represent Central Newfoundland. She is very determined to fulfill this position, and is dedicated to represent our province exceptionally.

 

Christopher Mitchelmore

Now here’s a guy who loves his home. Christopher hails from Green Island Cove on the province’s Northern Peninsula. Growing up in a small town, he had dreams of travelling all over the world. He started his own business at age 16 and knew from this experience he could make his own dreams come true—to date, he has travelled to 25 different countries. He graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Commerce (Co-op) and went to work in Alberta, with hopes of returning home. Strong in his belief that Newfoundland and Labrador is one of the most attractive places to live and work, he moved home and started working with a non-profit group in Community Business Development. He’s a passionate volunteer—some his current involvements include the Red Ochre Youth Council, Nordic Economic Development Corporation, Youth Ventures and Junior Achievement. Christopher is eager to get started on the PYC, saying “I’m proud to represent youth in Newfoundland and Labrador on the Provincial Youth Council and I am certainly committed to the organization. I look forward to meeting more youth from this province and playing a large role in advancing FINALY!’s mandate.”

 

 

Kyle Pearce

Kyle, is a Level 1 student at St. James Regional High in Port Aux Basques, but lives in the beautiful community of Cape Ray just a fifteen minute drive away. He is very active in his school, He has a seat on both Student and school council, he has been very involved with his local CYN since Grade 7 and this year was elected CYN Alternate coalition member he is also a co-founder of the QSA in his school, is a dedicated tutor in Tutoring for Tuition and sits on the Marine and Mountain Youth Employment Strategy committee. He spends his time doing things for the decorating committee, helping to organize fund raisers such as Rice day, a 30 hour famine, and Wake-A-Thons in his CYN group and QS and Writing. Kyle has a passion for being a leader, and is regarded by all the teachers and administration in his school as one, he was an attendant at PSLC(Provincial Student Leadership Conference) 2009 and played a big role in hosting PSLC 2008. He was even nominated for the Horizons leadership Scholarship last year, and Won a different leadership scholarship later that summer. Kyle was elected to the PYC at the 2009 annual general meeting in Port Blanford, and hopes to accomplish alot this year!


Brian Hudson

Brian, a young community activist,/volunteer, was born and raised in Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove. He now calls Wabush home. IN the 2001 municipal elections, Brian was elected to the municipal council of Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove at the age of 18. In May 2005, he was awarded the Newfoundland and Labrador 'Youth of the Year' award and scholarship from FINALY! Brian, still a young man, has had an interesting professional life. Having worked for the St. John's Maple Leafs organization, Federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and now as the Town Manager of Wabush, Brrian continues to seek professional growth. He also strives to give back to his community. Brian is actively involved at the board level with a number of community and service organziations (locall, provincially and nationally).

Katie Flynn


Katie is currently completing level III at Mountain Field Academy in Forteau, Labrador. She is president on her school’s Student Council, secretary on the School Council, and member of her Regional Economic Development Board. She is a member of both the girls’ volleyball and ball hockey teams and is very involved in her church. She enjoys painting, sports, reading, traveling and of course being involved and encouraging others to do so as well! Former Miss Teen Canada Galaxy and Miss Teen Western NL and a blue belt in karate, Katie is a motivated, determined and passionate young lady who wants to help the youth of this province. Appointed to the board in July 2008, elected back in October 2008 and voted through by the PYC in November 2009, Katie is elated to be representing the Labrador Region and to be a voice for the youth of Newfoundland and Labrador!

Scott Linstead

Scott is a high school student, currently in Level II at Mountain Field Academy in Forteau, Labrador. He was elected as Secretary of the very first student council at his school, and is very excited to help give the student body a voice. An avid tutor, Scott is participating in the Tutoring For Tuition program, as well as some volunteer tutoring. This past summer, Scott took part in MedQuest, at Memorial University and is very interested in pursuing a career in the medical field. In his spare time, he enjoys playing guitar, reading, and hanging out with friends. Elected at the Annual General Meeting in Port Blandford in October 2009, Scott sees the PYC as a huge step for himself. He is extremely happy to be representing Labrador, as well as the province as a whole.

Acting Chairperson

Chris Gaulton

Incredibly full of enthusiasm and positive energy, Chris volunteers within his community of Placentia. He is a volunteer firefighter for the Placentia Fire Department. Chris served as a decision maker for the Provincial Government Youth Retention and Attraction Strategy Summit in 2008. Chris was a councillor on the Pastoral Council for the Placentia area as a councilor from 2001-2007 and as Chairperson for 2008-2009. Chris has held many prestigious executive positions on Youth Political Wings, including; Regional Director of Avalon, Communications Director, as well as Policy Director. He was elected as the District Youth President for the Placentia – St. Mary’s District for four years.

Chris was elected to the PYC in September 2007 as an Eastern representative. During that term, he was elected as the Vice Chair of the council. In October 2008, at the FINALY! Leadership Summit and AGM, Chris was elected as the new Chairperson.Chris enjoys spending his free time jogging, hiking and travelling. In 2002, as part of his role in youth ministry, he traveled to Toronto, ON for World Youth Day, and had the privilege to be in the presence of Pope John Paul II. Chris has an intense passion and strong voice for representing the young of Newfoundland and Labrador. He is extremely thrilled and is driven to represent the youth of the province to the best of his abilities. The roles of the PYC are:

  • to appoint any person from within or outside the FINALY! membership to committees as it deems necessary to address specific requirements or expertise the committee may require to complete its task.
  • to have authority to hire staff, consultants, or enter into any other contractual arrangements necessary to achieve the objectives of FINALY!
  • to have the authority to dismiss any staff person for just cause.
  • to employ generally accepted practices for conducting the business of FINALY!, including public competitions, tender calls, interviews and qualification analysis and evaluations.
  • to develop and follow conflict of interest, hiring and remuneration guidelines for FINALY! activities.

The members of the Provincial Youth Council have many responsibilities to Youth in their region, including:

  • maintaining communications and support to zonal youth councils in their respective regions.
  • liaising between FINALY!! and regional zonal youth councils.
  • promoting FINALY! throughout their region and the province.
  • providing direction to staff concerning decisions of the PYC.
  • serving on ad hoc or standing committees to carry out any of the activities of FINALY!
  • upholding the principles and values of the organization

    We need a new representative on the Provincial Youth Council for the Western Region! Do you know a FINALY! member who fits the bill? This position will be appointed by the PYC, to act as a new Western Representative until our Leadership Summit and AGM in September 2010. So, if you know a FINALY! member who is engaged in their community, passionate about Newfoundland and Labrador and who wants to be a part of a group making decisions about how FINALY! operates, nominate them!
