Leadership Summit & AGM

We had a great time at our Annual Leadership Summit and AGM this year!

Over 40 youth attended the event this year at the Terra Nova Resort in Port Blandford, NL.

Unfortunately, our attendance numbers were down this year for a couple of reasons. The H1N1 Virus certainly made it impossible for some of our delegates to attend, as well as committments made to other youth events happening during the same weekend.

Even though the numbers were lower than we had hoped, we still had a fantastic summit. The speakers brought us presentations on many important topics, including:

  • Global Citizenship
  • Getting Involved in your school & your community (networking)
  • Financial Planning (one session for students and one for young professionals)
  • Social Enterprise
  • Forum for Young Canadians

We were happy to have with us some special guests, including the Honourable Dave Denine, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister Responsible for the Volunteer and Non-Profit sector and his wife Shirley, who joined us for supper on the last day of the summit. Parliamentary Secretary Keith Hutchings also stopped by on Friday to give greetings on behalf of HRLE.

We heard spooky ghost stories from Tom Brophy, and used some free time to watch horror movies and just hang out together. The weekend ended with a Halloween dance - there were some great costumes! Our 'Best Costume' award came down to a tie - the tie-breaking Thumb War also ended in a tie (these were very dedicated delegates) - finally, a round of 'Rock, Paper, Scissors' decided the winner.

The AGM went well, as did the election of the new PYC. For a list of new PYC members, including bios, click here.
